5 quick tips for travel safety

1. Be aware of your surroundings
Keep an eye out around you at all times and always know who’s in the vicinity. Knowing your exit is extremely important, as well as knowing the general directions of that area. It’s apparent to stay in well-lit, open areas with lots of people, but do avoid crowds.

2. Keep your head down
A major key to avoiding trouble is to blend in and become invisible, especially in rough areas. Don’t go around giving people reasons to target you. It’s important not to appear rich or as if you’re packing the ‘good stuff,’ so dress down or even like a university student. Don’t draw the wrong sort of attention to yourself, especially if you’re an obvious foreigner.

3. Outsmart thieves and scam artists
Recognize thieves and scams ahead of time - because maybe, just maybe, the nice young man asking for directions may actually be scamming you. Always be on the look out by keeping on your toes. Never let your guard down and always lock up everything at all times.

4. Don’t escalate bad situations
If you have the misfortune of being mugged, don’t fight your assailant. It’s important to comply and keep the other person as relaxed as possible to avoid from being seriously hurt. There’s no need to get yourself involved in the messes of other people.

5. Travel smart
Learn to be street smart by knowing how to talk your way out of trouble and more importantly, know how to avoid it all together. Find out what the typical scams are by researching prior to your trip; you can also ask locals for what you should be on the lookout for. Analyze each and every situation and leave as little opportunity for anyone else to take advantage of you.
Examples: Don’t leave luggage in your car, bags left out in the open, valuables in cheap hotel safes, and don’t pack expensive items that may draw unwanted attention to you.

Also helps to attempt to speak some of local language even just a short greeting may make you appear less like a bewildered tourist

Yes, This is something that is very important. I think that if a person is traveling to another country then one should learn some basic language of that culture.

Great tips! As a gal in NYC, one thing I try to always do is keep my Metrocard in my pocket rather than my bag or purse. That way, even if I was mugged, I'd still hopefully have a way home or to the nearest police station;-) I do this when traveling, too!

That is a really great idea. Anything that keeps you from getting distracted, or getting into a purse or wallet is a good tip to keep muggers at bay!

Great tips! I also like to carry a stunt wallet with me when I travel - if someone does actually try to mug me, I can hand over the stunt wallet. I always put in a couple of fake credit cards from offers that come in the mail, along with a very small amount of local currency. Thankfully, I haven't had to fork it over yet!

A stunt wallet is a great idea. This is something that I should incorporate. This is actually great advice. I may write an updated article on this subject and incorporate this into it.

In some countries you can just call for help, in Egypt for example people will respond to your call immediately. A very nice post, thanks :)

You are most welcome. This is true. There are some countries who respond immediately to a call. Knowing which countries do this is a must know type of thing. :)

When you're traveling in foreign countries, I strongly recommend wearing a money belt. Keep a small amount of cash in your regular wallet, but stash the bulk of it -- along with credit cards and important documents like your passport -- in the money belt you wear under your clothes.

A money belt is a great idea as well. Hiding it under clothing is something that could come in handy. If a person wears long pants on a consistent basis, there are smaller money type belts that can be worn under pants on the ankle. :)

I like how you mentioned that it is a good idea to know how to avoid trouble when you are traveling. I would think that getting lost is an easy way to find trouble when you are traveling in an unfamiliar area. Utilizing taxi services could be a good way to prevent yourself from getting lost when you are on vacation.
