Bucket list - Ta Prohm Temple, Cambodia

The Ta Prohm Temple in Cambodia is known for its astounding and other-worldly atmospheric aesthetics. This is due to the photogenic ambient nature of trees growing out of the ruins combined with the surrounding jungle scenery. Two of the most distinctive features of the temple are the endless roots and trees intertwining within the stone, and the preserved carvings of people and animals within the stone walls. It was built around 1186 in the late 12th to early 13th century Bayon style architecture, as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university.

Ta Prohm is the modern name for the temple, which was once called Rajavihara and is located in northwestern part of Cambodia. In 1992, UNESCO named the temple as a World Heritage Site, and today it’s one of the most visited sites in Cambodia’s Angkor region. Unlike most Angkorian temple ruins, the Ta Prohm Temple has been left nearly in the same condition as it was built originally. The temple may seem familiar as it was used one of the locations for the film Tomb Raider.

The entire Angkor region is an amazing area to visit. Ta Phohm is just one of many remarkable temples. Angkor Wat is perhaps better known but equally spectacular. Surprisingly, it is still possible to climb all over these very well-preserved ruins. I expect that will have to stop soon or this remarkable area won't survive so well for future generations. If you are visiting Cambodia plan on spending at least three days in Siem Reap - the town closest to Angkor. And stay in the town ... not in one of the new hotels that is out of town. The town of Siem Reap has plenty to offer in the way of excellent and cheap dining and there is a great night market filled with beautiful bargains.

Such an amazing place to visit. I was there this May. Allison is right, better to stay at the town rather than the hotels. They have some nice guesthouses, that provide transportation to Angor Wat. So take advantage of that. Best time to visit is during the dry season less people. Beautiful place!

The temple is awesome and it feels like a location form the movie Indiana Jones. The ambience and the feel provided by the temple are nice and it is glad to know that the place is considered as the world heritage site by UNESCO.

The temple is a very cool place. I have to agree with you also. It does feel like something out of an Indiana Jones movie.
