Dazed and seemingly immovable

I’ve noticed that I’ve become a bit dazed in life. Most days I’m stuck in a numb reverie, like I’m just going through the motions, just for the hell of it. I wasn’t created to become a drone, but that’s the effect of what the past untraveled six months has had on me. I understand that the majority of people go through similar spells from time to time in their own lives, and I also know that some people follow alike path, forever – with no thought of living an unconventional life. But it’s just not in my blood to sit still and be governed. I’m an anti-lemming, out to help forge a new path, and that path has come to be known as ‘the route less traveled.’ The whole ordeal that I’ve had to deal with the past half-year has put quite a damper on my spirit and my drive – but unlike most dumbfounded individuals, I know and understand my dreams and my goals, and I’ve realized how to achieve them. It’s not something everyone can say, but I know my direction. So from this point forward, I will be taking steps to right my path and focusing on getting back out there – out into the world, where I can feel freedom once again. My first step today was purchasing some of the items that I would need as if I was leaving for a trip next week. For the sizable trip that I have planned, there’s plenty to plan and to organize before I setting off. And it’s about damn time for me to get my head back in the game. (Alright, alright. I think that’s quite enough of my cliche phrasings)

Hi Brandon,

Thanks for sharing your story—I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through a tough time as well. In Oct 2011, I suffered from anterograde amnesia after sustaining a sports-related traumatic brain injury (TBI). Shortly after I started making memories again, my fiancé of nearly 5 years called it quits, I sustained a 2nd TBI, a family member passed away, I fell behind in grad school, failed to take the med school entrance exams.... you get the picture—it was awful.

I’m also a positive person, but life can sometimes unexpectedly kick you while you’re down. As cheesy as it sounds, I’ve found comfort in the words of Winston Churchill (and maybe you will too): “If you’re going through hell, keep going” and “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”. Through this experience, I’ve learned that it’s a perfect opportunity to get back to the basics: ridding your life of any trash (e.g. fair-weather friends), figuring out creative solutions to the lousy/stressful situations that aren’t so easily discarded, and focusing on the everyday small victories. Since doing these things, my life has (slowly) taken a complete 180. I’m now living the life that I’ve always wanted... And if I can do it, anyone can.

I’m learning that the most fulfilling lifestyles are lived by those who are committed to constantly evolving. Keep focusing on you, your goals, your successes, and most importantly, your happiness. I can tell from your writing that you are doing just that, and I have no doubt that you’ll regain that passion in no time. I’m so thrilled that your site is celebrating it’s one year anniversary and that you’ll be traveling again. I have no doubt that in a year from now, your life will be better (and completely different) than you could have ever imagined. Just keep up the great work; you’ll get there.

Wishing you all the best. :)

Jess,

Thank you so much for your message. You're quite the inspiration!! Your story will remain with me and remind me that I can get through it all – just as you have.

I don't know if you blog or have wrote a book – but I would read it! :)

Cheers,
Brandon

Hi Brandon,

I'm so glad that my words helped. Funny you should mention that—I’ve wanted to start a travel blog since 2011 (I even bought my desired domain names back then), but it wasn’t until I hit that rough patch that I decided to “go for it!”. I’m excited to FINALLY be launching my travel site, Sunshine Umbrella on March 13, 2013. I say “finally” because when I started on this adventure, I had no idea how much work goes into creating a blog (as such, I’m in awe of the work that you do through the Blogging Cartel-- really amazing stuff). Anyway, here’s a sneak-peak of the Costa Rica page: pic.twitter.com/Yozdg2Bs. In the "About" section of Sunshine Umbrella, I’ll elaborate upon my story. I’ll send you the link when it goes live. =)

Looking forward to reading about your new adventures! -Jess

Jessica,

Thank you :). It is a ton of work and I learned the hard way to be honest, but it's set me up to be able to help others. Your words helped because I was starting to consider taking time off. But I'm glad I've thought against the idea.

Anyway, it looks good. Let me know if you'd like any help with coaching or design :) We'll work something special out! It's the least I can do haha

Cheers,
Brandon
