Jewel in Saudi Arabia’s crown: Riyadh

In between the misty sand dunes of Saudi Arabia there sits the jewel in the country’s crown – Riyadh. A glistening cosmopolitan city that’s unafraid to rub shoulders with its cultural history, the capital is the perfect place for tourists to soak in the Saudi culture.
Indeed, cheap flights to Riyadh are now commonplace, with flights to King Khalid Airport just 30km from this teeming capital coming in at an affordable price.

But, what are the main draws of this tourist hotspot? In a city of culture and luxury it can be difficult to whittle down the best places to go, but we’ve done our best to show you the places you simply have to visit.

Masmak Fortress
A vast castle originally built in 1865, the Masmak Fortress is the place to go if you’re interested in Saudi Arabia’s turbulent and exciting history. The word “masmak” means strong, thick and fortified, according to the King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, and rarely has a name been more apt.

The site of some epic battles and the home of illustrious kings, the Masmak Fortress is a fascinating spot for the history buff.

National Museum
Another site of great cultural importance for Saudi Arabia, the National Museum is home to some fascinating artefacts from the country’s history.

Filled to the brim with information, objects and artworks from the Pre-Islamic era and beyond, the museum tells the story of Saudi Arabia unlike anywhere else can.

Kingdom Centre
“Kingdom Centre… the luxury of living.”

So goes the tagline for this opulent tower of apartments, retail outlets and tourist attractions. The Kingdom Centre is a bastion for affluent living, with world famous brands such as the Four Seasons hotel settling down in this hothouse of affluence and comfort.

As befits the modern look of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom Centre is all sleek, smooth corridors, rendering it in sharp but fascinating contrast to the desert lands of the city’s outskirts.

For one of the finest views of the city, try out Kingdom Centre’s world famous Sky Bridge, a viewing platform atop the 300 metre high tower.

The Globe Cigar Lounge
Contained within a breath-taking golden geodesic orb, The Globe Cigar Lounge is the place to go for one of the most romantic dinners of your life. Serving a selection of European and local delicacies, this sophisticated restaurant offers great food, stunning views, high-quality service and an unforgettable experience.
