Stir crazy, and seeking

‘Stir crazy’ is an early 1900’s term that was used to describe unbalanced people who have been incarcerated for far too long. While I’m not in prison, I feel as though the last six months have been relevant in many ways. Sometimes the feeling comes and goes, and other times it’s only a feeble-stirring – but not this time. The feeling has grown the past few weeks and I can’t quite seem to take control of it. I’ve come down with quite a case of Pruritic Peragritis (the dreaded travel itch), and I can’t seem to refocus my mind elsewhere. I find myself on Google maps everyday, creating new and interesting itineraries – that only if I could afford to jump in my car and take off right now, then I probably would just leave! ...I still might.
I obsessively research and create routings for trips through the southern and western parts of the U.S., with some spanning from Mexico all the way up to Alaska, and then a few that run along the east coast of Canada and the United States. If I could pick anywhere in the world to go right now, I would start in Spain and continue on with my European trip routing that I had researched a few months back. But the amount of money that that trip entails is far greater than a local continental road trip.

As much as I wish it was just as easy as stepping outside of my front door to relieve my condition, (because sometimes it can be just that simple) it’s unfortunately not. I’ve been to almost every area of Ohio and experienced nearly all of what it has to offer, since I grew up here. Which doesn’t leave much to be desired – so there’s not much hope here locally. It’s not even that I HAVE to see things that I’ve yet to see, it’s more that I need to be thrust into the unfamiliar, where I’m alone and left to let travel teach and change me. I yearn for that feeling of humbling and understanding, and I miss that overwhelming feeling of freedom.
I’m hoping that something begins to pan out, so that I’m not constantly stirring and unsatisfied. Sooner or later, some opportunity will present itself so that I will be able to afford all of the possible travels in the world – that I dream of having. I hope and I believe, as that is all I can do for now.

I know the feeling. I'm so tired of the static and cold of winter. Summer somewhere is calling my name.

Ecuador is a blast and easy for Americans- they use the dollar, it's 4 hrs from Miami, Spanish is easy and a lot of people speak english, and it's very youth friendly and cheap. Lonely Planet and Rough Guide on your kindle works well. Buses are cheap, safe, comfortable and get you everywhere. Man, I need to write up our last trip!

Ecuador sounds like somewhere that I will want to visit. Perhaps when I get back from my road trip?

I am feeling the same at the moment. Often when I get back from travelling the first few months of being settled and getting back into a routine (I shudder) are the worst. Hopefully we can both get back on the dusty trail soon!

I definitely don't stay in one place for too long. I have thought about putting down roots. However, I don't think that it will ever work for me. haha So, on to the next travel!

I totally get this being in Ohio myself (after growing up here but escaping to CO for 15 years). The itch to travel can only be satisfied through travel. Hang in there, make a plan and then go. In the meantime, just travel through images!

When I am stuck somewhere for awhile I typically go through my old photos, or edit new ones. This really helps with the issue! :)

I know the feeling all too well. I have the funds, don't have the time (working on changing that). Like you said, it's not just going someplace that we crave, it's being thrust into an unfamiliar situation. I've had success feeding my travel cravings by hanging out with non English speakers. I have a Saudi friend and hanging out with him and his friends at a hookah bar where everyones speaking arabic or turkish is *almost* like actually being back in Turkey. (Almost!) :)
