A Backpacker's Review: Braun’s MGK3080 Beard Trimmer Kit

For a traveling male, it can be easy to let things go, because of time, maybe packing issues, or simply because it doesn’t really matter all that much in the moment. For me, when I was backpacking Europe for nine months, I let the beard go, I let my hair grow wild, and I enjoyed the freeing feeling I gained by letting go of the expectations that society sets upon us. But after several months of doing the wild man thing, I began looking quite a bit more homeless than I was okay with, and so I needed a change.

The problem for me at the time was my style of travel, because backpacking meant I lived out of the rucksack that I had strapped to my back, and so every ounce and every inch mattered a great deal. Since I was carrying a professional DSLR camera with lenses, a MacBook Pro with external hard drives, clothes, toiletries, and basic survival needs in case of an emergency, my space was being pushed, my organizational skills ebbed and the weight was becoming a massive burden that I couldn’t help but notice in my neck, shoulders and back, day in and day out.

So, for me personally, when choosing the right kind of trimmers, I had to consider the weight and space a grooming kit would add to my already bulging pack. I searched store after store, looking for a quality trimmer set that was small enough and versatile enough for my style of travel, but it wasn’t until I looked online at what Braun had to offer. Sure, there were plenty of nice sets available in stores, but when my aim was to balance budget with necessity, I found they offered the best value.

I went with the MGK3080 multi grooming kit, which is a 9-in-one trimmer set that is advertised as offering precision styling from head to toe. What I liked initially was that Braun’s kit came with a variety of pieces that were small and lightweight, while the trimmer itself would add little burden to my pack. Braun’s MGK3080 comes with pieces for beard styling, hair clipping, body grooming, ear and nose trimming, and the ability to work with wet and dry hair, so it definitely fit my requirement of being versatile right away. A few of the pieces were of lesser use to me while on my trip, so I sent them home with some unneeded items that added unwanted space.

All in all, I found the MGK3080 to work really well at trimming my beard, remaining very precise as I shaped my jaw line and thinned my sideburns. The beard styling pieces offer 13 precision length settings in 2mm steps, which I found to be one of the coolest features, because by doing this, you gain more control over your final look while cutting down on how many additional pieces are needed for such an effect. The same worked well for keeping my hair short and easy to manage as I toured the hotter countries of Europe and Northern Africa. The body grooming accessory is a fascinating addition as it transforms these trimmers from being solely for beard and head hair, into an easy way to maintain complete control over the rest of my body. When you walk as long as I do when I backpack, sometimes you need to stay clean and clear. As much as I don’t want to admit it, the nose trimming accessory was a godsend, working magic where I didn’t realize I had a problem prior; I wonder how many people noticed my little stragglers hanging down?! Eek. Anyway! All in all, I found Braun’s MGK3080 kit to meet and exceed all of my needs, with great versatility in a small package.
