Columbus Ohio’s Gem: featuring Shadowbox Live’s Which One’s Pink?

Although many outsiders criticize Columbus, Ohio for being in the midwest, and perhaps surrounded (only partially) by cornfields, the city is a booming zone for creatives and young professionals. Not only was it named one of the most intelligent cities, it’s also been named one of the most up and coming cities in the USA, and with this boom opens up a whole new world of possibilities. City streets are being transformed and money is being pumped into all sorts of attractions, galleries, and entertainment. One of my absolute favorite gems in Columbus is that of Shadowbox Live, a dinner theater, concert, and theater venue that specializes in music theater, sketch comedy, and relevant plays like their new feature called “F*** Cancer.”
What makes Shadowbox Live so unique is that it’s the nation’s largest cabaret theater with the largest amount of resident actors. But that’s not all… The shows are awesome, the cast is phenomenally talented with each person adding their own unique flavor, and they’re so personal; more often than not, the same person that serves you your beer and your dinner will be one of the performers on stage. How cool is that?!

I’ve had the pleasure to check out a few of their shows, and I’ve never been to a bad one, or even an ‘okay’ one, as they’ve always been awesome. I’ve seen a couple sketch comedy shows and highly suggest their yearly Holiday Hoopla feature, and I’ve checked out a couple of their musical tribute shoes, like their current feature, “Which One’s Pink?” Which One’s Pink is their Pink Floyd tribute show. Last week, I had the chance to check it out and I was blown away.

The first half of the show was focused more on the original singer of the band Syd Barrett, with tunes played live from several of the band’s albums, early and some titles from after Syd left the band, like “Shine on You Crazy Diamond.” The first half of the show was very well done, entertaining, and performed well, especially considering how difficult it can be to do justice to one of the most popular bands in world history. The most impressive and powerful performance was when one of the actors dressed up like a general and literally stole the show. Epic!

The second half was a mashup of the album, “Dark Side of the Moon,” with alive performance of portions of the Wizard of Oz. And yes, it was as good as you can imagine, and more. The band rocked out and definitely did not embarrass themselves when performing the iconic Dark Side album, and the performers created a magical and mystical, and haunting performance of Wizard of Oz that captivated me so much so that I couldn’t look away. I had chills, I teared up, and I felt like I was in my happy place, and I never wanted to leave. Thank you Shadowbox!
