Considering Technology & Travel: Reviewing Tech21’s Evo Check Urban Edition

With the release of the new iPhone 8 and X, the buzz around the travel world has been louder than it has in some years. Why is that? Because Apple has continually reinvented the way people go about their everyday life, business, and travels. From changing the way we wake up, learn, communicate and be entertained, the new models of personal devices are here to stay in a big way. When I travel, I rarely go anywhere, even deep into the woods, without my own personal device. But that’s not to say that I let it control my life, and/or happiness, because I don’t. And though phones have shown to become addictive and lifestyle changing (sometimes more toward the negative experience), it doesn’t have to be that way. Like with all new technologies that redefine the way we live and interact with our world, we must find a balance.

My balance when I’m traveling is realizing when is the right time to be, the right time to focus and experience life around me, and the right time to be a user of my device. With a proper balance, travel can of course be strengthened and relaxing, rather than overwhelming and chaotic. Balance by dedicating majority of your time to the experience of travel, because there’s so much to see and understand about the world around us, especially when we’re in a place we’ve never been before; but I urge you to not let the device control you. Instead of seeing a place from behind the camera app on your phone, experience first, then capture after you’ve exhausted all that has caught your eye. The human experience thrives on in-the-moment focus, and without it, anxieties ramp up and our happiness and control over our lives can waver.

When I’m traveling, I dedicate specific times each day to learning, connecting, and entertainment. This can depend on where I am and what I’m up to, of course. The same goes for when I’m at home and not abroad, because the ability to balance one’s own life can be one of the most difficult thins to master in this day and age. When you have downtime, decide if it’s better for your to take a moment to breath and look around, perhaps even meditate. When I’m on a bus, or plane, you bet I’m reading or learning or finding ways to entertain myself, but not always. And that’s the key to a healthy lifestyle in the modern age.

Considering that I work on my phone, use hotspot to work abroad from my laptop, as well as manage most of my business data, contacts, communications, photos, games, etc. from my phone, it’s that much more important to safely store your device, because you never know what could happen. Sure, I’ve broken my screen while traveling, I’ve doused it in river water, and I’ve even had my belongings stolen, so the worst can happen just about anywhere, but with taking of proper precautions, you can save your digital lifeline so that your trip isn’t spoiled by some mishap. Phone cases are an ever-growing market, and as phones continue to evolve and be comprised of some of the most advanced and technically intricate builds, it’s just that much more important to do it the right way. For me, when I’m traveling to more wilderness areas, I tend to outfit my phone in a waterproof case. For all other times, I opt for a versatile but stylish option.

My current choice is the Evo Check (Urban Edition) by Tech21. Why? Because it’s thick and sturdy in all the right ways, yet also extremely flexible and versatile. The Evo Check was inspired by urban architecture, marrying an edgy design to optimum protection. The ultra-thin and lightweight plastic of the Evo Check gives users the ability to outfit their phone with a high quality case that looks great and feels great. It’s not so bulky as to become a burden in a pocket or in a backpack, and it’s not so weak that you’re giving up on protection. The Evo Check boasts FlexShock, which is advertised as an ultra-efficient impact absorbing material that has three layers of impact absorption, rated at 3m/10ft drop protection. Access to the buttons is made easy by the perfect design. Overall, I really like the Evo Check because of how flexible the material is, yet how dynamic it is. The design on the case provides friction so your phone won’t slip out of pockets easily, and since it’s so flexible, the case easily goes on and comes off without issue. All in all, Tech21 knocked this case out of the park.
