Escaping the Modern Din with Meze Audio’s 99 Classics

Modern humans are a strange lot, and to be honest, sometimes I feel like an alien in human skin, because it’s difficult for me to understand why we choose to live the way we do. Our cities are jam-packed and everyone’s constantly on the move, speeding this way and that, and with that lifestyle comes a constant noise and feelings of anxiety, stress, and sometimes much worse. When I’m in a city, I feel it, the tension, being surrounded by clusters of people and cars and racket, and chaos. You almost can’t hear yourself think. There’s little time for self-reflection and inner journeys, and there’s little respite for one’s own peace of mind.

Creatives need to think, feel and explore, and when one of those three are hindered, the art suffers, which is one of the reasons I moved into the country. But when I was in the city, I practically lived with headphones on. I wrote the entire first draft of my first novel with headphones attached to my face. Some of my prose even sings with a beat and melody, because I listened to instrumental chillstep music so loud so as to drown out the rest of the hoopla going on outside.

In times of mental tension, anxiety and foggy processing, I pop on headphones and get lost in the music, often meditating for awhile prior to working on any sort of writing project. There’s just a sort of balancing that needs to happen, almost daily, to get me at my best so my work doesn’t suffer for the effects of the modern hustle and bustle. It’s true that the mind needs time to simply wander. All my best ideas came from still moments of the sauntering mind.

Recently, I reached out to Meze Audio, who are based out of Romania, who specialize in high end audio, ranging from $79 earbuds to $2999 luxury Empyrean headphones. They were kind enough to let me test and review their 99 Classics headphones, which run $309 at the time of this article. In a solid pair of headphones, I look for ergonomic and comfortable fit, quality of build and overall creative design, and a reference sound with all of the dynamics. I want to feel the bass and to feel like I’m transported somewhere else.

In the 99 Classics, Meze Audio has delivered an iconic build with a classy, sleek look, comfortable pads, and a strong structure, paired with excellent sound. Meze boasts that the 99 Classics are meant to become an heirloom, rather than just another pair of headphones. I can see where they’re coming from, because they really are very fine, strong, and pleasing. The only thing I would worry about over the years is failing electronics, but who knows. What I really like about the 99 Classics’ overall aesthetic is the wood grain, which is real and unique to every pair of headphones.

The natural approach with the walnut ear-cups works very well in keeping a deeper sound when it’s needed. I like to hear the full range in equal quality, and they did a good job meeting that standard. Beyond the sound, I love Meze Audio’s approach to how they handle their business. I quote from their website, “It is worth mentioning that all the wood that we use in our headphones is strictly harvested from sources with certificate of origin. That is, mature trees that have reached the end of their life cycle. This way, we are helping the environment and we're giving the old trees a chance to shine one more time in the shape of Meze headphones.”
