Salomon’s description of their new premier trail shoe is that ‘there’s no bad weather when you’ve got the right gear,’ and I love that. While I’ve been in some situations that might beg to differ, most adventurers, hikers and trail runners will find that the XA Pro 3D GTX’s are indeed very fine shoes meant for a range of weather conditions, situations and terrain.

It can be difficult to find a well made trail shoe that is comfortable and versatile enough for a range of locales, and I’ve found that it can be even more challenging to find a pair of shoes that can withstand all that the natural world can throw at you. Because, if you’re like me and you love venturing as far away from people as possible, which often leads me far from the designated trail, then you have to come prepared for such wanderings. Maybe it’s the photographer in me always searching for the best shot, or perhaps it’s the dissenter in me that loves exploring the off-the-beaten-trail areas; either way, I tend to find myself hiking over more and more dangerous terrain, where sometimes I go too high in elevation to where the weather can turn in an instant. It happens, which is why it’s so important to not skimp on the gear you employ in the wilderness, as you never know what might happen when you’re out there.

The XA Pro 3D GTX trail shoe is rated high for wet conditions, so when things change or when you find yourself among wetter conditions, you will care less about the ‘what ifs’ and more about the experience you’re having in the beautiful natural world. There is a deep-seated feeling, a connection or sense of belonging if you will, and one of the worst things to have happen is for something within the mind to tear you away from experiencing that sensation fully. If you’re worrying about your survival, then that certainly trumps almost any situation, but if you’re simply bothered by something like moisture, then you’re not giving yourself fully to the experience. You have to savor it, every breath and every second, and every moment experiencing the amazing animate world we live in and were born from.

Salomon’s XA Pro 3D GTX trail shoes offer a low profile fit that maximizes security, motion control, energy management and stability as you move fluidly through almost any terrain. The outsole features a premium wet traction Contagrip, while the midsole incorporates EnergyCell, injected EVA and compressed EVA technologies. The chassis of the shoe is Salomon’s 3D Advanced technology, and the membrane of the shoe is a flex engineered Gore Tex that provides a high level of quality of material for an extended longevity of use.

From intensive training to off-trail adventures, I found Salomon’s XA Pro 3D GTX’s to be an exceptional trail shoe for either style, and most in between, because of how strong they are built, how snugly they fit and how their features compliment a wide range of approaches and needs. The 3D chassis provides a nice level of grip and friction, which is perfect for elevation and rocky trails. The body of the shoe is semi-stiff, while the tongue is padded, so that both features provide for stability, as well as comfort. What I noticed as that with the inner Ortholite sole, comfort works its way from my feet up through my back, so for longer trips my body comes back feeling better than it had with some previous shoes I had used. The outer material is very strong, tight-knit, and treated very well for wetter conditions. All in all, I found the XA Pro 3D GTX shoe to be a solid trail shoe, perfect for a myriad of situations, climates and terrains.
