Finding Peace in the Forest and Staying Warm Over the Holidays

The trials and stresses of life often wear me down and continue to wear on me, so much so that daily I find myself daydreaming of my favorite times spent in the forests near my home. Sure, it’s cold with the winter winds and morning chills, and snow threatening just north of me, but that doesn’t stop the spiritual of heart from exploring the natural splendor for the peace that comes with time spent connecting to our origins. Because letting the never-ending rat race of responsibilities overcome you will never let you find peace or happiness, but hope is not lost.

As I continue deeper in the woods, I am filled with a tranquility, a balance of mind, that helps me through the more difficult moments that life tends to challenge each of us with. During trouble, my mind is usually the furthest from, but with meditation and mindful wandering, I have found that I can sore above my problems, take a step back and approach whatever is bothering me with a level head. This works wonders for me, and for most unbalanced situations, whether it’s simple irritations or heavy inner battles, or existential crises, time spent in the simplicities of nature can make all the difference. But it is the pairing of focused mindful experience and daily meditation that cures my ailing soul in my most difficult times. Maybe it’s the restful mind that gains power, or if it’s simply getting back to basics, either way, there’s a power in the whispering wood that pulls me in, and makes me feel as though I am in the right place at the right time, doing the exact right thing.

During the summer months, I am free to walk outside my home and within feet I am in the woods, and am more often camping than not, it seems. But winter makes time outdoors difficult. Yeah, it can be blistering cold out, but I’ve found that even as little as a five minute walk in the woods can be mood changing, where I can rise above my unbalanced emotions and find comfort and peace, and belonging, and positivity. Just because there’s snow doesn’t mean there can be no peace of mind. So, grab a well-made coat that keeps you warm, and get exploring, because for all women and men alike, it is the steady heart and mind that finds optimism in the quiet sounds of the winter wood.

For me, I prefer to find multiple uses for my clothing, and when it comes to winter wear and coats, if the coat looks great yet is practical too, then it’s a winner. For cool Autumn days, I go the way of the withering leaves in a comfortable and colorful statement piece, but on the coldest of winter days, I prefer a heavier, warmer, more versatile coat like Madewell’s quilted down puffer parka. So, the next day you don’t feel like yourself, or you find your mind is too full, don’t just sit indoors and watch tv… Get out and just be.

For today's article, I have teamed up with Madewell...

Madewell's Quilted Down Puffer Parka
The quality and craftsmanship that goes into Madewell’s coats is nowhere as apparent as in their Quilted Down Puffer Parka, which is a fashionable puffy coat without the normal puffy coat issues, and bad looks, as this parka is indeed striking, fitting beautiful with its A-line fit and interior drawstring effect that helps to cinch out the cold. It’s built water-resistent and warm with its wind-blocking ribbed collar, cuffs and fleece-lined pockets, and of course because it’s packed with down feathers. It’s beautifully made. Our recommended favorite!

Madewell's Bouclé Double-Breasted Coat
The hayfield tinted, double-breasted Bouclé is one of Madewell’s Italian makes, because of it’s luxury textural fabric. This coat is a unique, flowing piece which emulates what many women want in modern fashion: comfortable, yet stylish with high end feels, while not skimping on practicality. Match the hayfield color or don’t, either way, this coat will work with just about anything, as long as you have an ounce of fashion sense. Leah found this coat to be very comfortable!
