Headphones for the Backpacking Traveler

As a travel writer and photographer who loves to travel intimately with each visited destination, I tend to focus on backpacker style travel. Though it's not typically luxurious, generally far from a high-end vacation, I feel as though I can see every place better, if I am closer and able to connect easier with locals. To travel this way, I must live out of the giant, over-weight rucksack on my back – packed full of clothes, toiletries, personal items, computer gear, hard drives, camera equipment and more, which makes packing quite the challenge. Before I headed out on my 9-month adventure around Europe/Northern Africa in 2013, I published a packing series which can be viewed here: Travel Planning: Step 3 – Packing

When I am preparing for an upcoming trip, I have to first consider the amount of equipment that I will need, and then I must decide on which route I'll take for my luggage. I hate having to walk around a city, in between towns/accommodations, where I must lug all of my stuff around with me, so I tend to lean towards the rucksack route. Once that's decided, I scrutinize each and every item, considering the size, weight, and importance of the item.
I thought that I might touch upon my recent search for the right headphones, as I am now in Colorado, and adventure traveling through the Rockies and the wilderness beyond the front range. I knew that I wanted a pair of dynamic and powerful headphones that would breakdown small and tidy, without adding too much weight. I looked into around 10 various companies and their best options that fit my needs, and I settled on trying out 4-5 sets of varying headphones prior to the trip, and I chose the V-Moda XS on-ear headphones. A huge thanks to V-Moda for offering the perfect option!

My focus was on sound quality, isolation, and of course, physical design/the breakdown capabilities. I love to write narrative stories and fiction short stories in complete darkness, where I'm able to limit all sensory input – that includes unnecessary visual and audio distractions. Nothing else compares to being in a dark bedroom, comfortable, surrounded by nothing but your thoughts, a computer screen, and either some ambient sounds, nature sounds, or some sort of soft-beat music – it truly puts me in the mood to write, and my ideas flow without problem or distraction.
I considered another important use for these headphones, because I enjoy hiking/touring a place with headphones on, at times, because it allows me to continue learning while I walk around and explore. Often times, while in nature, headphones are not necessary, because the experience of the wilderness, without the hindrance of human interference, is a beautiful and soulful experience.

The XS model headphone set from V-Moda worked out so perfectly because of its dynamic sound ability, solid isolation for quiet work times, and its easy to store breakdown capabilities. The XS on-ear speakers fold in, fitting into a lovely small case, allowing for lightweight storage in my pack – so, I suppose you can call this a serious travel packing #WIN!
