Beard growing is an art, I’ve come to realize, and while I’ve always thought righteous beards were strikingly manly, I had up until recently always failed at it. It’s not easy because it takes a lot of time and patience, and the right sort of approach; oh, and even then you can still fail if you have uneven growth patterns. When I was in my early twenties, I would let my facial hair go and it would become this wild, uneven monster that sadly looked more like a series of smudges than a glorious beard, but now that I’m in my thirties it’s had enough time to develop; all except for one evil little spot on my cheek that refused to grow in as full as the rest. Maybe I’m the only one that notices it, but I doubt it. And seeing as how my wedding is in a couple of months, I knew I needed to put in some work so I reached out to Beardsley for help.
Beardsley is a great company that focuses on the bearded gentleman, with their line of beard care and hair care products. They sent me their gift box, which included two beard shampoos in wild berry and cantaloupe, beard conditioner, oil, lotion and balm… All for beards; how glorious!
Since I have my wedding coming up, I needed to really step it in gear with my beard care if I was going to be featured in my wedding photos with any facial hair at all, because if that spot didn’t fill in, I would have to go clean-shaven, and no one wants to see the baby face on such a monumental day. So I employed the use of Beardsley’s balm and other products, and so far they’re working great.
The change in regimen began at the start of using their products, which consisted of a new approach to how I took care of my beard. Wash every other day or so, towel dry, when slightly damp apply the beard oil, then condition with the balm, and on off days when I don’t wash the beard, I still apply oil and balm to keep it soft and healthy. The key to why this works is that it keeps your hair follicles stimulated, and pores open, your skin moisturized, and your beard soft yet strong. Then when I feel extra itchy or notice dandruff, I employ the beard lotion. It’s important to stimulate the hair follicles by using a comb and brush often, but not too often, and when you apply the beard oil, lotion and conditioner, it’s important to massage the skin to help the process along of forming new hairs.
I found Beardsley’s products to be high quality and smelling amazing, with each having their own intoxicating scents that come together beautifully. The oil for beards has a pleasant bay rum scent, that works very well at moisturizing the skin beneath the beard, while adding a conditioning effect to the hairs. The lotion for beards has a similar scent and is more for soothing the unwanted dry beard that happens often in early beardom. The balm, which is my absolute favorite, is a versatile botanical that is a bridge between the oil and lotion. Not only does the balm smell the best of the bunch, a bay rum and sandalwood fragrance, it works really well too. The balm is a lotion-like consistency, but it is used as a leave in conditioner, that helps to wrangle the wilder hairs that have yet to be trained while styling and maintaining optimum health.
The shampoo works well, leaving my beard clean yet still healthy. Employing both shampoos in a hot shower is a lovely experience, because the fragrance fills up the shower and becomes a sort of aromatherapy type of approach, which I found to be relaxing. The conditioner works really well on my beard, taming the craziness of my young beard while keeping it soft and workable. One of the unique aspects about Beardsley is their Bearded Notables Series, which are specialty bottles featuring famous bearded icons from the past, like William Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, Socrates, Freud, Darwin and Lincoln. All in all, I came away very impressed with Beardsley’s line of beard care products, because they’re of obvious high quality, they feel great, smell great, and work wonders on youthful and dry beards.
