Restaurant Feature - A perfect day ending at Hook & Line Pub in Port Angeles, WA

A couple weeks ago, I found myself in the Pacific Northwest and I was having a perfect day. It was day three of my adventures around Olympic National Park and the Olympic peninsula, and I had just drove back from an amazing hike to Marymere Falls. The day before I drove a couple hours to the renowned Hoh Rainforest and the Spruce Nature Trail, enjoying perhaps one of the most spiritually active places in the world, as those are trails that take you through the old growth forests where the trees reach upwards of 200-300ft and 12-20ft in diameter, and every limb is painted in green air plants and moss.

The feeling of being so small beneath those massive Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar and Western Hemlock trees melted over me for hours, and I stood in awe of the size, age, and wisdom of the natural setting. I wanted to venture off path and meditate in the forest, but there were so many “Stay on the path” signs that deterred me, and there were just so many people passing me by when I stopped that I got deterred and vowed to find a lesser traveled area of the park the next day.

Fast forward, and I found Marymere Falls area to have wider paths, forests just as neat and spiritual, and I was able to wander a bit off path to sit and meditate for awhile. Plus, the photos were stunning, because I arrived around 8 or 9am and the golden soft light was hitting the forest in magical ways. After that, I ventured along the nearby Sol Duc Nature Trail, enjoying long moments of natural silence among the rushing current of the rivers and streams, and waterfalls. After several hours of my mind calming until the inner monologue disappeared, I made my way back to my car, feeling completely at peace.

I drove back with the windows down, enjoying the perfect weather of early summer in Washington with a smile on my face. I found my way back to Port Angeles, where I was staying for a few nights, and then stopped at the new Hook & Line Pub. This new Port Angeles restaurant is located along the ocean, bridging the shopping streets of the town with the port. It’s boasts a modern pub restaurant style design with an open kitchen, and a menu featuring regional seafood, burgers, creative pub sandwiches, and much more. Hook & Line Pub can be found at 201 E Front St, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

I met Michael, the owner, for awhile, and he treated me to a Rockfort Belgian beer and talked about his life of adventuring, world traveling, and his latest life experience of opening two restaurants in town, Hook & Line and the neighboring Kokopelli Grill. He was very kind and suggested I try the fried Halibut with fries, as well as the Smoked Salmon chowder. The halibut was fresh from down the coast, and it was cooked to perfection, as the fish was flakey and moist inside, with a lovely and satisfying crisp. It was the best fish I had had in years. It was so tender and fresh, you can really taste the difference of having frozen fish in Ohio versus fresh off the coast; such a difference, that you’re talking about the difference between decent and life changing. The fish was life changing, and the fries complimented it very well, being that they were also cooked perfectly, offering a delicious salty goodness with the ideal crispiness. The chowder was good, but had a heavy smoked flavor that sort of threw me off a bit, so I focused more on the fish and chips, which rivaled the best that I’ve had even in England.
