Review: 4 Man Popup Tent by Cinch!

Every once in a great while a product that I am reviewing will take me by surprise. Today, I am referring to Cinch!’s 4 Man Popup Tent… Why? Simply, because they have thought of everything. In the modern age, it’s often the most simplistic product has the greatest success. Sure, there are more extravagant tents out there on the market, but the makers of Cinch! have made this their greatest strength. Much like Apple computer and phone products, simplicity and precision is power.

Most tents are a pain to setup, especially upon initial setup, but what’s more is that take down can be even more of a headache. One of the strongest driving factors in choosing a tent is irritated you will be after putting the damn thing up, right? I’ve been there, and still have those moments, but the deal with Cinch is that they’ve bridged the gap between simplicity and functionality. Not only do their tents popup, but they fold back down just as easily (with a bit of practice). The nice thing is that Cinch has put together a quick video tutorial that is essential to mastering the quick up and down, not because demonstration is really needed, but because their popup tents are a different animal than most folks will be used to.

Popular in the festival scenes of the UK, Cinch! has caught fire in Europe and is coming to the U.S. They got their start with crowdfunding on Kickstarter, and they’ve been evolving ever since. Beyond their 2-to-4 man tents, they’ve also delved into the need of solar power within their tents. What I found most interesting about their tents is the ability to create a working popup structure that requires little effort, that also is feature rich. The Cinch! 4-man tent comes equipped with two entrances and two windows on each side, canopies on each end, with an extended area that can be used for storage, or as a wet/mudroom, or to simply invite more friends to hang out. The fabric is highly waterproof at 4000HH, the ground floor is an extra-thick bathtub-style fabric, and there’s space dedicated for four people to lay down comfortably, pockets for storage, two torches that transform into lanterns, and LED tent pegs.

The tent and its accessories are stored in a large, circular, but thin bag. Once you pull the tent out and separate the groundsheet, fly and canopies, then with the help of another, you can each pull one end away from each other, then popup the tent. Once its staked down, you’re ready to boogie. It’s that easy. I’d say it took me five minutes my first time, to get it up, and all the basics setup. The canopy and outdoor areas on either end of the tent are a fantastic addition. It’s nice to be outside, but not in the blazing sun at times. For festival-goers, the whole setup is brilliant. For wilderness campers, the Cinch! tents are solid for experienced campers, who understand the need to properly prepare for weather. These tents have special ventilation built in with them and are solid against precipitation, but if you’re in the mountains, especially where quick and extreme weather changes can happen, then I might suggest something better suited for such environments.

All in all, I found the Cinch! 4 Man Popup Tent to be a great social tent, more for get togethers and festivals than for extreme adventuring, which isn’t to say it would not last. It is indeed a very well-made tent with a lot of features to like, and it’s just so damn simple to put up. Upon initial testing, I found no glaring criticisms or drawbacks, but I will continue putting the Cinch! popup tent through the rigors of world travel.
