Review – Cobra Solar-Powered Battery/Charger

The Cobra CPP 300 SP is a small solar-powered battery charger, equipped with USB ports. This device can charge three mobile devices at one-time, and it has high efficiency dual solar panels for quick charging in the sun. The battery is sizable at 6,000mAh, and will power most iPhones two-to-four times before needing recharged, so that's pretty awesome... Especially for me, as when I travel abroad (especially when I am wilderness camping), I almost always simplify my gadgets to solely my iPhone – unless my laptop or camera decides to join me along my trip!

When I first tried out the Cobra CPP 300 SP, I was camping outside of Poudre Valley in a box canyon in Northern Colorado. The heat was strong during the day, but brutally ice cold at night, but when you camp in high altitude in late-Autumn, that's pretty much the norm. The temperatures ramped up quickly after sunrise, and by mid-morning the sun had restored the mountains to a comfortable temperature. By day two my phone was in need of some juice, as was my travel partners', and by the time they finished, the battery was empty on the CPP 300 SP. I left the battery pack in the open sun and went about my various wanderings through the woods, with the hope of snagging some photos of any type of wildlife. After a few hours, we returned from a vigorous hike to a ready to use Cobra pack.

All in all, I really love the Cobra CPP 300 SP battery/charging pack. It's small and well-built, fitting nicely in any backpack, though it does add a bit of weight. When you're backpacking for a long period of time, every gram of weight matters! But I think this device has cemented its place in my permanent packing list. The only criticism I have is that the time required to reach full-charge in solar power can be longer than is comfortable. So, while it will travel with me on most trips, it's won't be my only battery charging device.
