The perfect hiking shoe for travelers can vary greatly, because each person is different, but so is each activity and trip we take. I’ve hiked up the Old Man of Storr in Scotland’s Isle of Skye right after the rainy season, with the wrong kind of thin and airy hiking shoes, and nearly drowned in mud. A week later, I bought a new boot to replace the other mud-soaked ones, and I was hiking around the furthest end of the Snaefellsnes peninsula in Iceland, wearing a boot too high and stiff around my ankles, which made it very difficult to properly maneuver over the lava fields. So it goes to show you how important it is to consider the terrain, the climate, and the season of your trip, because that can greatly dictate what sort of boot is the right one to take.
When choosing the right shoe for outdoor gallivanting and adventuring, consider the terrain first. Will you be moving over sand dunes or red sand in the desert? Will you be climbing rocks and treading through deep water? Will you be traversing rough terrain that could cause you to severely roll your ankle or lose your balance, or stub your toe? These are all things that can easily happen to anyone outdoors. We’re not as nimble as we used to be. It’s sad, but in the current state of our current evolution, we are more used to sitting than hunting like we used to, so our muscles are weaker, our bones are more brittle, and so on it goes. So, one tiny wrong movement can put us each in a world of hurt, so we must consider this before so much as a single step.
Today, as the headline indicates, I am featuring the Isambard Safety Toe Waterproof boot by Dr. Martens. Why feature such a heavy duty shoe? Well, because this is a serious shoe for a serious traveler. Sure, these boots are made for industrial workers, but in all honesty, I would wear these bad boys to a lot of the areas I seem to find myself when I’m looking for the perfect photo. The Isambard boots are super heavy duty, yet they don’t add a ton of weight to your feet, which is another big characteristic to consider when choosing the right shoe.
The Isambard Safety Toe Waterproof boot has an innovative design that provides the user a snug, form fit, but also with a lot of other features. Not only is it very well made with quality materials, it has special material on the tongue and ankle that helps your foot breath. The material is thick and strong, and is non-marking, so you don’t have to worry too much about ruining them wherever you go. Additionally, what I found most impressive was that they are heat resistant and waterproof.
I found Dr. Martens’ Isambard boot to be the ultimate boot for almost any travel location. Sure, I would never suggest this boot for someone simply strolling the streets in Paris, or mountain climbing a rocky slope, because there’s footwear out there that better caters to that particular sport. Just by simply holding this shoe in hand, it’s apparent of how high quality and how strong Dr. Martens made them. The industrial safety shoe provides a very stiff toe that will give you nearly total protection in almost any situation in the wild, and the thick tread, advertised as slip resistent, is built for rough terrain. The Isambard boots are great for tough travel, in my opinion.
