Cooking is one of the great pleasures in life, not only because you’re preparing a dish to eat which brings others together, but also because cooking is one of the most therapeutic things we can do. So, if you ever find life to be too overwhelming or stressful, focus on nothing but cooking a meal for yourself, and others. Maybe it’s as simple as focusing on nothing but the task at hand, but there is indeed a healing property to cooking. Eating can also be quite therapeutic, but without the experience of preparing it yourself, the value is lessened and so is the payoff.

I’ve been cooking for well over a decade and as my skills have grown, so has my appreciation for fine tools to help me get the most of the experience. When it comes to kitchen knives, a lot of us are used to the dull, weak or cheaply made utensils that frequent most department stores. And while I use many items that would be detestable to many professional chefs, I never skimp where it counts the most. In food prep, the knife matters, especially if you’re working with meats and other foods that require cutting techniques. And just like in the kitchen where the pan matters, the knife matters a great deal.

For me, I’ve tested several of the world’s best brands over the years and have come to respect Kyocera, among others, and have incorporated a few of their knives into my kitchen. For example, my latest addition is the
6” Premier Elite Chef’s Santoku, or more simply known as a damn good chef’s knife. Kyocera’s ceramic blades fantastic. The blade is crafted with superior strength and sharpness and the Pakka wood handle feels great, while offering optimum control.

Kyocera knives are crafted in Japan, and since the Japanese are famed for making some of the finest knives, it should be no surprise that they are one of my highest recommendations. The design etched on the blade is really sharp looking, described as: “Zen Sand Garden” pattern; the etched design on the blade is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese zen sand garden (karesansui) and Kyocera describes the handle shape as: the flat sided oval handle design is inspired by the shape of a Koban, an old Japanese gold coin.

The 6” Premier Elite chef knife is ideal for everyday slicing of boneless meats, fruits, veggies, and for most prep. What I love about Kyocera is that the blade comes ready to use, with a beautiful look and feel, and tends to hold its edge longer than any cutlery I’ve worked with. The blade will never rust, or alter the smell or taste of the food, which is very important for longevity of any kitchen. It’s design boasts a perfect balance, made of high grade materials that provide the user with a very long lasting, high end chef’s knife.
