Review: PACE Aviators by Gargoyles Eyewear

A quality pair of sunglasses is a must have for any traveler and every trip. The problem that I run into is the dilemma between packing a really nice pair that I’d worry of dropping, losing or getting stolen, versus packing a throwaway five dollar pair from one of those shopping mall kiosks. Sure, the nice pair looks great, accentuates my style and properly cares for my eyes, but the other pair can go through hell and I wouldn’t bat an eyelash. Over my nine month trip through Europe and Northern Africa, I went through four or five pairs of sunglasses, and went a few months of that time without, because I refused to ruin another set.

For awhile, I carried both, a high end pair in a hard case and a cheap set, but as a backpacker, the issue of weight and space become paramount; especially when my back and shoulders start screaming from the burden of my rucksack. But the more I travel, the more I refine my packing list and gear. Now-a-days, I look for a quality company that makes heavy duty, performance eyewear that comes with a warranty and a nice case to keep them safe. Not many companies pull off this feat; but my newfound favorite does: Gargoyles Eyewear.

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to team up with the fine folks over at Gargoyles Eyewear for this review, and they sent me their classic aviator style eyewear: known as PACE. Gargoyles is known for their performance eyewear, with high quality and fashionable frames and high end lenses. The PACE is no different with its polycarbonate lenses that exceed ANSI Z87.1+ protection requirements for high mass and high velocity impact. The lenses reflect a subtly blue-purple tone that provides the user with optimum clear vision while protecting the eye from harmful ultraviolet light. Upon first inspection and trial, the lenses of the PACE model sunglasses exceeded my expectations; the quality of the optics are immediately apparent.

The frames of the PACE sunglasses are carbon fiber, fitted with rubber temple tips and air filled nose pads that allow them to fit snugly, but comfortably, which is especially important for travelers who require the ability to move around freely, leaning forward without the fear of loosing the sunglasses from the face. The shiny gunmetal finish looks dynamite with the grey toned lenses and the hardware compliments the style as well as completes the high quality build of the frames, providing the user a very strong, yet sleek pair of sunglasses.

When you’re holding the PACE sunglasses, they feel good, and built to last. I found the PACE model by Gargoyles Sunglasses to be a great choice to majority of my trips abroad; not only because they are quality made, but also because of their “Do The Right Thing” warranty and the protection provided by their unique and edgy eyewear case that comes with every pair. Initially, I was impressed by the sleek and modern style, then I became impressed with the quality of the frames and lenses, although if you have a bigger head, they may not fit perfectly. But the fitting is subjective to each person, and may only require a different style choice.
