Review: The New Free Spirit Backpack by Gobi Gear

Every once in awhile, a new and innovative product comes onto market and changes the game. And today, I have the pleasure of bringing to focus such an invention. It may sound a little hyperbolic to say game changer, and perhaps it is, because the product I am featuring today has yet to come to market, but is due early 2018. But seriously, Gobi Gear has created a pretty cool backpack that I believe every backpacker should carry with them.

When you’re backpacking abroad, especially when you’re across the world in another country, you are burdened by a large rucksack, stuffed with all of your belongings which must get you through for weeks, perhaps months at a time. Sure, you can reup on supplies, or can buy certain things as you go depending on where you’re at, but traditionally your rucksack is heavy, bulging, and must be filled with anything you might need to survive; tent, sleeping bag, clothes, toiletries, electronics, first aid gear, and the list goes on and on, and on. The burden starts with the weight and depending on how fit you are, this will dictate how much you carry. So every ounce, every item matters, and so after you’ve gone on a few backpacker trips, you learn how to properly prepare. Finding items that are multifunctional and super lightweight can save a ton of discomfort, which is why I endorse the Free Spirit backpack by Gobi Gear.

The Free Spirit backpack is a very light pack, made of a water-resistent nylon, that allows you to be able to fold it up into a small, tight package that will save a ton of space for backpackers who prefer leaving their rucksacks back at the hostel when they explore. With this daypack, you can leave all the items you don’t immediately need in a safe place before heading out. I’ve both, carried a bulky backpack and used it as a daypack, as well as went without and simply took my rucksack everywhere (not fun!). Gobi Gear’s new pack is 30L, with organizational pockets inside, full waist straps, lower back support pads, as well as an inner bladder pouch. The straps are strong, feel good. There are two side pockets, a hidden pocket under the hood, a front slip pocket for devices, and an organized space inside perfect for separating your things. All in all, I came away very impressed with the simple, yet wonderful design of the Free Spirit backpack.
