Review: WE Knife’s #701E Folding Blade

What’s one of my favorite items on my gear list? Well, if I’m camping and venturing out into the depths of the great wilderness, then it’s my knife. There’s just something that draws me in. And there are times, quite often I might add, where I have forgotten my knife, and it feels like I’ve forgotten my hand. Because when you’re traveling in the real wilderness, anything can happen, and you have to be ready for that. But one of the things that sets humans apart in the modern age is our ability to adapt, but to adapt to some of Nature’s most trying environments and situations, without the ability to cut, carve, hone, skin, or chop, then the likelihood of survival slims down tremendously. And to me, that’s a scary thought.

Sure, I know a lot of the basics and some more advanced techniques to surviving, but it all depends on what happens to you. Imagine, if you will, that you found your way between a mother bear and her cub, what do you do? You might be wondering how a knife will help here. To be frank, it probably wont. That is, unless you kill the bear and are either wanting the meat or the pelt, but if an angry mother is angry that you’re much too close to her babe, then very few modern technological advancements will save you. Perhaps a gun, or some bear mace. I’ve even seen bear horns, but I have no knowledge or experience with those. Imagine hiking up a mountain and the weather turns, and you’re stranded, for days, maybe weeks, what do you do? Believe me, a quality, reliable blade can be the difference between life and death.

Today, I would like to feature model #701E, a very interesting folding blade by WE Knife. The ‘#701E’ name may not be an entirely catchy moniker, but what matters a name when it is simply a label, because this blade is much more than four characters, it is a fashion statement as well as a serious tool for survival. It measures at an overall length of 9-inches, with a blade length of 4-inches, at a thickness of 0.16” and made of D2 material at a hardness rating of HRC59-61. The handle is made of G10 material with titanium and stainless steel hardware, which feels very strong, and the blade itself holds an edge very nicely.

The design of the #701E folding blade is very cool, with its leaf patterned handle, wickedly shaped blade with marbled finish. The handle compliments the blade well, and is designed to fit smoothly, giving the user the ability to work with precision. The soft-gold hardware looks sharp, and adds a certain high end appeal to such a bad ass blade. I especially like the star shaped hardware. The flipping mechanism is good, but does require a quick flick of the release to ensure it opens all of the way and locks, otherwise I’ve found that you have to push the blade back to lock it in place, or simply try it again. But once you get the hand of it, the #701E is a quality blade with a dynamic look and feel, and is capable of satisfying even the most picky knife enthusiast.

The #701E is probably best for casual usage, for your everyday blade needs, but is capable of withstanding heavier use, such as the demanding nature of camping and exploring the wilderness. Though, if you are going into heavy bear country, or are going out far enough that getting lost or stranded is quite possible, then I might suggest a fixed-blade survival knife to compliment this folding knife. Overall, I came away very impressed with the quality, the look and feel, and the craftsmanship invested by WE Knife. The #701E is a cool, modern blade, with a lot of capabilities, and comes complete with a carrying case with soft areas inside, as well as a microfiber cloth and tool to disassemble the handle for cleaning.
