Romanticized memories

The fondest memories are often those that are short-lived and free of negativity. When traveling from hostel to hostel, it’s ridiculously easy to make new friends, because everyone else is in the same boat – alone and wanting to that to change. Anyone who wants to make friends at a hostel typically hangs around the common areas or the bar area, and they tend to gaze around watching for any sort of connection that comes their way. It’s pretty easy to simply walk through the common areas, catch sight with a loner or small pack of people, and share a smile – it’s as simple as that to make a friend. If that doesn’t work for you, simply plop down in a seat next to a bunch of others, and let the conversation sweep you away.
Going with the flow in hostels is a great way to have some of the best experiences while traveling. I’m currently on my third week backpacking in Spain and I’ve made countless friends from all over the world. Some have promised to write and we exchanged contact information, while others have parted ways like wisps, as quickly and as simply as the moments we met. The beauty of these short-lived relationships is that you tend to receive a person’s true self more than you would with people at home. People are often more forward and willing to try new things, and they’re usually bluntly honest with you about who they are and what they’re thinking – as they don’t expect to ever see you again. Some of the best conversations I’ve ever had were with people I met in hostels.

What’s even more wonderful about these relationships is there’s not enough time to wrong one another – typically, there’s only now and perhaps, tonight, and that’s all that matters. Good times, topsy-turvy fun, and life-changing experiences are meant to be had in these short exchanges. You often see the best of people and have the best times in these powerful, yet quick moments.

Throughout life, it’s normal for people to think back on certain memories and particular people with an everlasting fondness. It’s a similar feeling to that of past relationships. It’s not uncommon to think back on a past dating relationship as if it were the best time you ever had – but maybe it really wasn’t, but all you can remember are the positive experiences you shared. Thinking back, later in life on the moments of meeting people in hostels is little different – it can actually be even more enhanced. Due to the nature of these quick and colorful meetings, you will forever look back as if these were the best times of your life.

So, to close this thoughtful piece, I encourage you to get out there and travel! Be sure to stay in hostels, meet new people and make those special memories that you will forever look back on with empathy, and make them count!

My favorite things in travel have been Hostels and everybody's story and public transportation!

This is so true, my first experience of hostel life was in Oz and it was so easy to make friends, someone offered me a beer before I had even taken my backpack off, I ended up traveling the country with these people then living with some of them and I definitely look back with fond memories....even if I am only remembering the good parts.

There is something very laid back and relaxing when traveling and going with the Hostel route. That sounds like an awesome experience that you had. Do you guys still stay in touch?

I'll be traveling this July and was considering staying at a hostel. Admittedly, it made me a little nervous, but this article gives me some renewed hope :0)

You should certainly experience staying at a Hostel. Try it once. If you realize that it isn't for you then you know for the next time. :) Happy travels.

I actually did it! It took a little getting used to, but it worked out really well. I got to stay in a really great family orientated area with plenty of mom and pop eateries (best part). I'll definitely try that route again. Thanks for the pep talk :0))

Hostels are hit and miss for me. I love staying in them and meeting interesting people with great stories to share, but I also find the "standard conversations" a little tiring after a while: where have you been, what have you done etc etc. I realize they're kind of necessary but sometimes, with the wrong person, they can smack of travel snobbiness.

Still, I would stay in a hostel over anywhere else because it's great to meet so many different kinds of people.

You can really meet interesting people. I love story swapping, and that could be why I enjoy Hostels. Either way, if someone hasn't ever done this I always suggest to give it a shot.
