Setting up your home office for comfort and success

Recently, I remodeled my home office and it completely transformed my ability to work better and more efficiently, to work happier, to work for longer hours and to work more creatively. When you’re in a dank space with white walls and no flavor or creature comforts, it can be a drag, and like a prison, it can confine you to a limited way of thinking, so if you’re a creative like me, then working in such a space can truly hinder life and success. For me, it was all about creating a colorful, positive environment to complete my novel in, as well as to blog and write for you fine folks. When I’m traveling abroad, having an ergonomic workspace is almost never an option, and while I’ve made do for years, finding ways to limit distractions (by wearing headphones, and writing in a blacked out room), I wanted to explore a new approach and see if it helped with my novel.

As any author will tell you, novel writing is a difficult journey that takes years, and even though I found success writing when I traveled, I struggled to find synergy when writing my novel at home. I researched desks, and workspace layouts, and once I settled on the furniture, all the other pieces came into place. I hung up bright and colorful tapestries, and allows more natural light in, and I posted up inspirational messages, quotes, and artwork. Then I bought a comfortable chair, designed for heavy use over long hours, and I configured my monitor, laptop, keyboard, mouse, speakers and wired the whole thing together, and everything seemed grand. Until I sat down to write. Something just wasn’t right, so I fiddled with the height of the monitor and my laptop which sat flat on the desk beside it. I ignored the problem of discomfort for hours that first day, forcing myself to work, only till I couldn’t bare the crick in my neck. My monitor was eye-level, but my laptop was far from it, so I did some research and found what I needed… A laptop stand, so I could align my secondary screen at eye-level with my external monitor, and it was almost as if the stars had aligned. I knocked out a thousand words in a couple hours and then floated around the rest of the day, as happy as a meandering cloud.

The stand I use is the STAND-V000S by VIVO, which is a tabletop monitor riser, which is large enough to handle most standard (LCD/LED) computer monitors and laptops. Made of premium steel and aluminum, the V000S is perfect for small monitors and laptops, elevating either from 4.5” to 6.5” off the desk. The 12”x8” top surface is fitted with a padded anti-slip silicone surface that grips whatever you put on it. The riser itself is capable of supporting up to 33lbs, so you can sort of run with how you design your workspace.

The VIVO stand promotes a great solution for making your workspace ergonomic, so that it promotes success rather than discomfort. I noticed that my posture had improved, and I had less neck and upper back pain, which is a godsend after so many years on the road. All in all, I found that VIVO makes a solid product with the best of intentions in mind. Big thanks to VIVO for recognizing a common modern problem, and making something of quality as a quick and simple fix.
