A reliable portable hard drive is a necessity for any tech traveler in the modern day, but for the lowly backpacker (like myself) and photographer, I have to pay attention to more than simple reliability. A portable hard drive must be thin and light weight, but dynamic enough to last the long brutal days, a lot of which are spent camping outdoors, and it must be large enough to secure my original photographs, my edits, and all other content without issue. So, when you're a traveler, a backpacker, AND a technical nomad, you have to find what works best for you. Since my photographs are near and dear to my heart, where any corruption, drive failure or damage to the casing of the hard drive could cause me to lose my life's work, I have to be very judicial when choosing the right storage options for me. The other problem I run into often is for lack of space... Backpackers are notorious for being weight-nazi's when it comes to what they carry with them. Rightly so, because every ounce matters, and every pound literally translates into a sliding scale from 1-10 for back and shoulder pain. Every ounce matters!
As a tech backpacker, traveling light is the number one objective, and beyond that as a photographer, it's about getting by with the least amount of equipment – which is a sort of awful game, really. When I backpack, I travel with a laptop (MacBook Air), two hard drives, a pair of over-ear headphones (as they help with the writing process), a lightweight and small mirror-less digital camera (Sony A7R), and one versatile lens. That may or may not sound like a lot of gear, but once you add the weight of clothes (for cold and warm weather), toiletries, other electronics and camera gear (memory cards, cases, cleaner, tripod, etc), money, paperwork (visas and itinerary), survival gear, camping gear, and so on and so forth – By now, HOT DAMN, my back is really hurting now. And hopefully, you see my point.
My point is: I am always on the lookout for the slimmest, lightest, most reliable drive. I've had the chance to try out the StoreJet 25M3 USB 3.0 hard drive by Transcend. These guys are doing it right! The 25M3 is drop tested, with 360-degree shockproof (triple-layered) protection, AND it comes with a three-year warranty. One good smack, or drop from a foot or two above the ground, and most portable hard drives are doomed to a sorrowful and brutal death, and so is the data on it. But not the StoreJet. I have the 2TB version and I've already done some testing with it, and I'm impressed.

I've also been working with the Transcend SDXC UHS-I Ultimate 64GB memory card. If you're a photographer or videographer, you know how important it is to use quality cards, with high speeds – and it's important to have a lot of them ready to go. I used to use SanDisk cards, religiously, but when one of mine went down (due to corruption) and I lost the images from a gorgeous mountain scene in California, I was pissed and I immediately set out to find a new alternative. It's taken me some time, but I've found my new storage company, Transcend. They care about the data and the professional experience.
