When you’re a tech traveler like me, your business, your travels and your life flows up and down with how reliable your technology is. Having dependable gear and quality makes all the difference between traveling and living well versus stranded and losing business. I roamed the planet for many years as a tech traveler, where I lived out of the rucksack on my back and paid to move from place to place by working on a laptop. I also shot with a camera and powered everything when I was away from easy access to electricity with an external battery.

Sometimes, I was relying on the next job to pay for my next move, so the moment one of my devices went down, I was stranded for a time. It happens, sure, but if you invest in the right equipment, then you’re chances of that happening become smaller. Plus, when you’re traveling abroad, in a country where you don’t speak the language and that’s far away from home, your chances of finding tech support are slim, even finding the right cable wires can be a chore, especially if your device has proprietary cables.

But if you invest in quality, then you can avoid most hassles, typically. Or, you can purchase lower end products that work well for awhile, but create little to no problems when they go down, because you can purchase another relatively affordable model and off you go again. It all depends how specialized the equipment you need is. I tend to work with high end cameras, Mac laptops, and off brand external batteries.

I recently teamed up with one of Amazon’s retailers, MoKo, who specialize in all sorts of tech devices, external batteries, and mobile device accessories. They sent over their Car Jump Starter External Battery and an iPad case that fit my 9.7” to test, try out in the field, and to write about here today...

MoKo’s Peak Car Jump Starter marries together what you want in a portable power bank with what you need to jump start a vehicle. As a backpacker, I would often visit a new country and rent a car to explore the less touristy areas of beautiful countryside, so this option is invaluable. Especially when you’re a backpacker on a budget like I have been many times in my travels, to where I pick the small, low end rental that may have a few issues from time to time. This battery offers 1000A peak with 19800mAh battery with 12V auto emergency booster, as well as 2 USB ports and an LED flashlight. How cool is that?

When you’re living out of the rucksack on your back, every inch and every ounce matters. So to be able to bring together all of these features in one small package is a life saver, so you’re not killing your back and shoulders with the burden of all that weight, but you’re also not giving up precious space to bulky gear. Anything lightweight, multi-functional and slimlined is invaluable to a tech traveler like me. Overall, I found that MoKo’s battery works well and marries many much needed features in one tight package.

The Case Fit for my 9.7” iPad is a plastic base backing case in a beautiful wrapping. I opted to try out their Sea & Flower model, which has a lovely printed painted scene of wildflowers growing on a hill that sweeps down to a swelling ocean beach. The back piece of a clear hard plastic with holes for the camera, speaker, top sensor, power buttons and audio buttons, as well as for the charging wire. The front is a folding soft cover that sets up conveniently as a stand or for use to handhold the iPad. Overall, it’s built well and looks nice, and has a lot of value when you consider how affordable it is versus other comparable brands.
