That time I visited Malaga

It was 1979, and it was the height of the Cold War. I was stationed with the fifth platoon in Malaga… Okay, I joke, I joke. Heck, I wasn’t even born yet. Anyway, I thought it would be nice to start putting together some special posts featuring certain places I’ve been, attractions I’ve experienced, and stories that are worth telling, rather than put an entire destination and what all I got up to into one blog post, as you can see on my ‘Trip Update’ posts. I have a new series idea coming out next month, titled ‘The Salt of the Earth’ where I basically showcase some of the more amazing places and things I’ve done, but until then, I thought I would feature Spain’s southern coastal city of Malaga.

I first visited Malaga – no, really, this time it’s for real – this past year in April 2013. It was the first time I was able to get back ‘on the road’ in over a year, because of that whole awesome Puerto Rico robbery fiasco, and I had spent the previous few weeks in Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, and Granada. My heart had since fallen in love with Spain and Spanish culture (and of course, the women weren’t too shabby either – haha), and I was amazed in particular with the range of different cultural significance of each of those places – and with the hope that Malaga would have the same effect on me as well, I left Granada for the seaside city.

Upon first impression, leaving the bus station, I wasn’t too fond of it to be honest. The part of town around the station was dingy, packed with traffic, and resembled every other mediocre city that I’ve visited around the world. However, I would have failed myself and my job as a travel writer, if I would have let my initial thoughts and feelings judge an entire place just from a few minutes in the wrong part of town. So, I walked, and I mean, I WALKED. Sort of like Forest Gump, I never looked back. I strolled down to the water, through a beautiful park, and then into the pedestrian market district, before finding myself passing through a fascinating historic area, and finally to an amazing Roman theater. It never gets old viewing ancient ruins and historic monuments, and the Teatro Romano was no slouch either.

For my remaining time in Malaga, I roamed around the city, finding its quirky shops and watching its strange street performers, while thoroughly enjoying myself with a few mates that I met at my small hostel, which was located near the pedestrian district.

I left Malaga for Ronda via bus, but the journey wasn’t a comfortable one, and if you can drive its worth hiring a car. Comparison website such as Holiday Autos can find you the best price from suppliers like Hertz. It’s something I wish I had done, roamed the region, photographing the beautiful areas, and completely bypassing the Costa del Sol trip from hell, but there’s always next time!

I landed there and would consider it just a place you have to land like Managua in Nicaragua. I stayed in Torremolinos at a half board where the food was terrible. It would not be your kind of place unless you liked being surrounded by tourists. However you can use it as a base to do day tours. I went to Gibraltar from there. I liked Spain too but prefer the informal atmosphere of Latin America

Awesome. Really good to know too. I do not like to be surrounded y tourists, so I will be staying clear. :)
