Travel Review: Cafe Sabor & Mack’s Inn in Island Park, Idaho

Among the most visited places in the world is Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and for good reason. Not only is it packed with natural beauty, geothermal wonders and is a window into wildlife and ecosystems that no longer exist across the country as they once had, but the park is absolutely stuffed with tourists. So much so, that surrounding towns have been transformed over time from the tourism, like that of Island Park, Idaho.
When you plan a visit to Yellowstone, plan early and be prepared to run into a TON of traffic. It’s inevitable, even late in the season. My wife Leah and I visit in mid-September, a week before the snows came, and it was still bustling with tourists from all around the world. It was wild, and super annoying, and often times frustrating, to where we were commenting that Yellowstone is just too ‘peopley’ for us. So we saw the hot spots, then escaped into the lesser known areas, and at night, we escaped far out of the park, staying in Idaho Park among other neighboring regions. Leah and I had the opportunity to check out Cafe Sabor one night before staying in Mack’s Rustic Inn across the street. A short and scenic drive of about 35-minutes will bring you back into the park via West Yellowstone, MT.

Cafe Sabor is a Mexican-American style restaurant with a wide range of entrees, like Chili Verde, Tacos al Carbon, Carne Asada, Pollo con Crema, Monterey Chicken, Arroz con Pollo, as well as seafood, fajitas, tacos, pastas, soups and many other traditional-inspired dishes. Leah and I started with the Spinach Artichoke Dip and ended with the traditional menu’s Chimichanga, and tacos, and found each to be quite good. We had ice cream for dinner and overall found Cafe Sabor to be satisfying, though not the best Mexican restaurant we’ve ever had, but still very good. The staff was very nice, and the overall aesthetic is similar to many relatable restaurants found across the US.

Across the road, we stayed at a roadside inn known as Mack’s Rustic Inn, which is similar to a highway motel but with nicer features. Mack’s Inn may sit a little lower in stars on a traditional hotel rating system, but we found it to be comfortable, easy to sleep in, and quiet at night. What’s more is it’s the perfect place to escape from the Yellowstone crowds and to save on how pricy it can be to stay at some of the larger hotels outside the park. Each room is outfitted with a queen bed, free wifi, microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker, and DirecTV with HBO. Overall, we were comfortable and would stay again.
